Dr. Lynne Morrow Explores the Soul Behind the Spirituals
Few can speak with such passion about the power of the voice. Over three live-streamed events, Oakland Symphony Chorus Director, Dr. Lynne Morrow, brings her brilliant insight into the soul of the spiritual.
1. GENESIS & HISTORY
Friday, November 13 at 3:00 – 3:30pm
Dr. Morrow will demonstrate the resilience of the spiritual and its transformations from solo to choral to instrumental.
2. ENTERING THE MAINSTREAM
Friday, November 20 at 3:00 – 3:30pm
Dr. Morrow will analyze the spiritual as it enters the mainstream during the Victorian era, in the international tours of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, in concerts by celebrated vocalists, and Harry T. Burleigh’s introduction of the spiritual to his teacher Dvořák.
3. MASS FOR FREEDOM
Friday, December 4 at 3:00 – 3:30pm (then on-demand)
Dr. Morrow had the inspiration for a new choral symphonic setting of spirituals so Michael T. Roberts was commissioned and he will discuss his Mass for Freedom. Dr. Morrow and Roberts will introduce the work followed by a video performance of the premiere. A post-event Q&A follows.
