Oaktown Jazz Workshops Performance Ensemble
Oaktown Jazz Workshops (OJW) is a non-profit, community based, cultural education organization dedicated to passing on the tradition of jazz music to young people through music instruction, educational presentations and live concerts.
Founded in 1994 and based in Oakland, California, OJW celebrates jazz music as a complex and enjoyable music as well as an important indicator of American history. Jazz offers a rich legacy that has touched the lives of each generation and continues to be a critical component of contemporary culture.
Community Performances
Performance is not only an essential component of our students’ training but is our principal vehicle for developing an appreciation of jazz among members of the community at large.
The most experienced of OJW students frequently perform at concerts, festivals and other community events. The Oaktown Jazz Workshops Performance Ensemble is featured at events such as, Oakland’s Art & Soul Festival, The Oakland Symphony’s Independence Day Celebration at Craneway Pavillion and The Port of Oakland’s Community Day in Jack London Square.
