Discover Candide: A Peek Inside the Stage Director’s Mind

Philip Lowery, stage director of a recent production of Candide, will  bring us an intellectual and a physical experience of one of Leonard Bernstein’s more complex works of music theatre.  He will begin with a look at Voltaire’s original work, discuss why Bernstein may have chosen this text and discuss the performance history of this work, which premiered in 1956, one year before West Side Story.
We will then have the experience of being staged by Mr. Lowery in one of the opera’s fun and intricate ensemble scenes. This will be a thrilling introduction to Candide for newcomers and an expansion of our understanding of this great work!
