The Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra presents its second concert of the season FREE at the beautiful San Leandro High School Performing Arts Center. The concert features Youth Orchestra violin student Jonathan Chen, co-winner of the Concerto Competition last season, in his prize-winning performance of Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 2.

Audio and video clips:

Bernstein- Overture to Candide

Bernstein himself conducting. Note that the tempi and rhythms are extremely articulate and clear, but far from metronomic.

Wieniawski- Violin Concerto No. 2, Mvt.1

Violinist Gil Shaham performs with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Lawrence Foster.

Marquez - Danzon No. 2

Performed here by the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.

Schubert - Symphony No. 8 in B Minor ('Unfinished')

Performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra led by Carlos Kleiber. Notice the refinement of tone, the attention to long phrases by all sections of the orchestra, and incredibly huge and dramatic climaxes that push the extremes of dynamic range without losing beauty of sound and balance.

1. Allegro

2. Andante con moto:

Rimsky-Korsakov - Russian Easter Overture

Leonard Slatkin conducts the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
