Verdi’s Messa da Requiem is a musical setting of the Catholic funeral mass for double chorus and four soloists. It was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist whom Verdi admired. Verdi originally wrote one of the movements in remembrance of Rossini; it was part of a mixed mass project with 13 different composers, which never came to pass. The work was at one time called the Manzoni Requiem. It is rarely performed in a religious service, and is usually in concert form.
