Katy Stephan

soprano

Soprano and pianist Katy Stephan’s suitcase is well worn and papered with stickers from all over the world. Inside, frilly classical training nestles beside casual pop style, creating a unique sound that is both sweet and smart, delicate and powerful. She offers beautifully crafted sonic valentines made from scraps of Chopin nocturnes, vintage glass glitter, oaths, prayers, curses, and a bloody beating heart.

You may have heard her as a soloist with the Oakland East Bay Symphony (Bernstein’s Mass, Sondheim’s Follies) and the Bear Valley Music Festival,or helming the piano at Martuni’s. Her voice has been featured in major motion picture soundtracks, TV movies and theme songs, and even in children’s toys.

She has created original music for theatre productions (Word For Word, Porchlight Theatre, Cerimon House in Portland) and modern dance (Project Agora, Copious Dance Theatre).

A collection of original songs that Katy recorded at home for National Solo Album Month was named one of the San Francisco Chronicle’s “Best Local Releases” of that year; and for three straight years, she wrote, recorded and posted a new original song every week on her website every7days.com.
