An active orchestral musician both locally and nationally, Alice Lenaghan is Principal Flute of the Oakland East Bay Symphony and has performed Principal Flute with the Detroit, Toledo, Flint, Napa, Modesto, Stockton and Fremont Symphonies, and the Sacramento and Michigan Operas. She has appeared as concerto soloist with several orchestras, performed on center stage at the California State Fair, at the Hollywood Bowl, AT&T Park and performed as a flute soloist throughout Ireland with the Placer Pops Chorale.
In addition to orchestral performance Alice is an experienced chamber musician. As a member of Duo Viva, her premiere CD is available from Little Piper and was frequently invited to perform at the National Flute Association conventions. Her flute and piano duo, Keys and Breeze, regularly performs themed recitals including audience-friendly commentary and was awarded a performance grant through the Yolo County and California Arts Councils. She has been a guest musician with the Bay Area contemporary ensembles Earplay and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and performs as a member of the Pacific Arts Trio. Occasionally she is delighted to perform on the baroque one-keyed flute, recorder, penny whistle, Irish flute as well as the piccolo and alto flute.
Dr. Lenaghan is currently Adjunct Assistant Professor at Los Rios Community College District and formerly served on the faculties of California State University-Chico, Albion College, Concordia (MI) and Oakland (MI) Universities. For several years she conducted the Flute Workshop for high school students at the Interlochen Arts Camp and directed the Flute Ensembles with the Sacramento Youth Symphony.
Alice Lenaghan holds a doctorate in flute performance from the University of Michigan in addition to performance degrees from Western Michigan University and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she also minored in music history and baroque performance. Her teachers include Ervin Monroe, Thomas Nyfenger, Michel Debost, Christine Smith, Leone Buyse and Michael Lynn. She lives in Sacramento with her husband where she enjoys reading, cooking, sewing, yoga, bird watching and is an award winning knitter.
